As the use of lithium batteries increases, so do the risks of fires caused by these batteries. Nationally, incidents are on the rise, and locally, we’ve had three lithium battery-related incidents in the last three years—one of which resulted in a total-loss house fire.
To help protect you, your family, and your home, here are essential safety tips:
Listed or Unlisted?
Use only listed devices and batteries. Look for safety marks like UL (Underwriters Laboratories), ETL-Intertek, or CSA, which signify reliable standards.
Be cautious with unlisted products. Many unlisted devices and batteries are sold online. Reputable manufacturers will display their listing proudly.
Beware of knockoffs. Unlisted products may mimic the appearance or name of listed ones, making them easy to confuse.
Avoid 3rd-party battery rebuilding. Rebuilt batteries may compromise safety.
Charging and Storage Safety
Unplug chargers and remove batteries after charging. Avoid leaving charged batteries in the charger.
Detach batteries when not in use. Exclusions include cell phones and devices with built-in batteries.
Charge indoors safely. Use fire-resistant surfaces like concrete, countertops, or solid wood without nearby combustibles (e.g., drapes, paper). The larger the battery, the more distance is needed from flammable materials.
Store batteries with care. Follow the same precautions for charging when storing charged batteries.
Avoid risky locations. Don’t charge or store batteries in hallways, near exit doors, or in sleeping areas (cell phones excluded).
Additional Tips
Watch the risks. Larger batteries, like those in e-bikes, can create significant fire hazards, as shown in Halifax lithium battery house fire footage.
Know extinguisher limits. Water or dry chemical extinguishers cannot put out battery fires.
Inspect batteries. Don’t use batteries that fit too tightly or appear bulging—signs of internal failure.
Recycle safely. Call Metro at 503-234-3000 for the latest lithium battery recycling guidance. Never dispose of them in the trash.
Lastly, don’t forget:
Ensure working smoke alarms are in every sleeping room and on each floor near stairs. This small step could save your life.
